’O sole mio is the Neapolitan equivalent of standard Italian Il mio sole and translates literally as “my sunshine”. My interpretation of the director choosing this song is that the characters find ‘sunshine’ in the friendly, traditional atmosphere of the bathhouse, where everyone can be and do what they want to without fear! This includes cricket-fighting, or Miaozhung singing this Neapolitan song, which he feels shy to do outside. In the third stanza, the singer speaks about coming to his ‘sunshine’ at night, and this is what one of the customer does when he has an argument with his wife. He even reconciles with his wife later in this very place. The bathhouse seems to be built on the communistic value that seems to bring people happiness in good company! The younger brother singing it at the end is an ode to the memories they built, and the relationships they made in this place of refuge!
